Londoners enjoyed balmy conditions today as the mercury reached 27C.

Tuesday's high in the capital is likely to be the peak temperature for the week, with the dry conditions expected to make way for thundery showers later in the week.

While temperatures will stay in the low 20s, thunder is set to hit the capital on both Thursday and Sunday, the Met Office has said.

Between brief spells of sunshine, Londoners can also expect rainy weather right through until the start of next week.

“Temperatures in London are knocking on 27C at the moment so some lovely warm weather to be had today," said Met Office meteorologist Sarah Kent.

“But over the next few days we do see a general change to slightly more unsettled weather."

Ms Kent said temperatures would remain in the low to mid 20s for the rest of the week so it will still be warm, but that Tuesday night was expected to be “uncomfortably warm and foggy."

Wednesday will start off dry and sunny before clouds move in from the west, she added.

She added: “On Thursday we will see some more light rain in the morning, so a damp start to the day.

“We see a little bit of an improvement but as it does clear, we will see some scattered showers which could be heavy and thundery in the middle of the day.

“At the end of the day it will be brighter with some sunny spells and temperatures will reach 23 to 24C”.

Friday morning will likely be dry but Ms Kent said gradually there will more “clouds bubbling up and some showers.”

A low pressure system is coming to the UK on Friday evening bringing more unsettled weather, she said.

“On Saturday, there will be outbreaks of rain coming in from the west so a wet start to the day across London with temperatures at around 23 to 24C.

“It will then be chased away by thundery showers.

“On Sunday it will be one of two showers but generally sunny at around 24C.”

The mixed conditions come after London saw its hottest day of the year last month with temperatures reaching 34C – one of the warmest June days for 40 years.
