London weather forecast: Capital could see one of warmest March days on record as temperatures soar

London is set for what could be one of the warmest March days on record.

The Met Office has said that a high of 23C (75.2F) is “on the cards” in London on Tuesday with a “small chance” that temperatures could reach as high as 24C.

The warm weather coincides with the easing of England’s lockdown measures, with the “stay at home” order ending, groups of six people, or two households, now able to meet outside.

Outdoor sporting venues such as football and cricket pitches, tennis and basketball courts, outdoor swimming pools, golf courses and sailing clubs have also reopened.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates said it will be "quite chilly" on Monday night before heating up on Tuesday.

"It will be quite chilly by night but quite warm by day", he said.

"Tonight it's dry and clear. It will be quite chilly. It will be down to 4 or 5 degrees.

"Tomorrow [Tuesday] it's looking like a beautiful day, lots of sunshine clear blue sky and warm temperatures."

He said that "22 or 23 will be on the cards" on Tuesday, with a "small chance" that the weather in London could even hit 24C.

"It will be really warm for the time of year"

Mr Keates said that if London reached 24C it would be one of the warmest March days on record.

"Tuesday and Wednesday we're looking at very warm conditions.

“I wouldn't rule out 24 on Tuesday. If we get 24 or more it will be one of the warmest March days in this country."

Waitrose said sales of coal barbecues had increased by 841 per cent ahead of the Easter weekend, and that it had seen an increase of 50 per cent in orders for grilling food such as burgers and sausages.

The supermarket chain said it also expected sales of Champagne to increase by 132 per cent in the coming days.
