London Tube passenger ‘racially abused by men who told her she was not English and was uneducated’

A Lib Dem councillor says she was racially abused by two “vile” men while she was travelling on the Tube.

Julia Ogiehor, who represents Muswell Hill at Haringey Council, said she was listening to music on the Northern Line and minding her own business when the men launched into a rant at her.

She claims the two unknown passengers said she was “not English” and was “uneducated”.

She wrote on Twitter: “According to these vile pigs, I am not English or from this country and I am uneducated.

“This was literally unprovoked. I was minding my business listening to my music and just going home.

“But they really wanted to know where I was from and did not accept it when I said London.”

The tweet has now been shared more the 6,500 times.

Ms Ogiehor added: “Luckily, I had four amazing people who came to my defence and called the police.

“I also called the police and have three witnesses.

“So we’ll see who's the idiot now. @BTPLondon, it was on the northern line to High Barnet. The incident occurred between Camden and East Finchley.”

She later thanked Twitter users for sending her a “deluge of supportive messages”.

She continued: “The one positive from this is show of support and agreement that this type of thing is despicable and unacceptable in our society.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers from British Transport Police are currently investigating a reported hate crime on board a Northern Line train. The incident happened between Camden and East Finchley.

“A number of enquiries are being made, there have been no arrests at this stage. Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 37 of 22/06/2019.”
