New cycle and pedestrian safety plan unveiled around busy London train station

'Supersize' SUV cars much more likely to cause fatal injury to cyclists and pedestrians

Tuesday 6 May 2025 12:20 , Nuray Bulbul

Sports utility vehicles (SUVs), which are "supersized" cars, have been found to have a 44 per cent higher fatality rate than regular cars when they collide with cyclists or pedestrians, according to London researchers.

Since children are 82 per cent more likely to die in an SUV collision than in a car accident, the risk is considerably higher for them. Children under ten had a 130 per cent increased chance of dying.

Because the supersized cars' front ends are probably taller and blunter, they pose a bigger risk to "vulnerable road users."

This implies that bicycles and pedestrians will be hit higher up on their bodies—for example, the head rather than the pelvis for a youngster, or the pelvis rather than the knees for an adult.

Although the brigade had been operating under regulations that were amended in 2009 by the London mayor, who was a government minister before the 1987 King's Cross fire, Sir Sadiq Khan had pledged to find a solution.

According to the 2009 Fire Precautions (Sub-surface Railway Stations) (England) Regulations, "any accumulation of combustible refuse or other combustible matter must be kept clear of all parts of station premises."
