Stansted Airport fire: Flights delayed as passengers evacuated after blaze in lounge

A fire forced passengers at Stansted Airport to be evacuated, causing travel chaos and leaving flights delayed.

The small blaze broke out in the airport’s Escape Lounge at around 3.30am.

Passengers were evacuated from the departure lounge and prevented from going through security until the fire was under control by 6am.

A spokesperson for the airport confirmed there were no injuries and the blaze was extinguished quickly.

Many flights have faced delays with some departing over an hour late.

As a result of a separate signaling issue, no trains ran to or from the airport until around 8am.

While services recover, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 15 minutes until around 9.30am.

The latest tracking data shows many flights from Stansted Airport continue facing hour long delays to scheduled departure times.

A Jet2 flight to Lanzarote is set to take off an hour later than its scheduled departure time of 10.10am.

Meanwhile, a Guangzhou flight which was scheduled to take off at 9.50am is set to depart at 10.20am.

Many Ryan Air flights from Stansted Airport to destinations including Ibiza, Faro and Dublin are set to take off on time.

Delays on the Central, District and Piccadilly lines

Several Tube lines are facing delays as a result of signal and track failures.

The entire Central line is delayed due to a signal failure at Queensway.

Tickets are being accepted on buses, the Elizabeth line and Chiltern Railways at no extra cost.

Meanwhile, there are delays on the District line between Earl’s Court and Wimbledon due to a signal failure at East Putney.

Elsewhere, the Piccadilly line is delayed between Acton Town and Uxbridge due to a track fault at Sudbury Town.

Delays on Elizabeth line following train fault at Liverpool Street

The Elizabeth line is facing 15 minute delays and potential cancellations following a fault on a train at Liverpool Street.

Although lines have reopened, disruption is expected until 10.30am, affecting busy stations including Paddington, Reading and Heathrow Terminal 5.

Stansted Airport released an updated statement at 9.45am confirming it is taking passengers longer than usual to pass through the airport.

The statement read: “The Escape Lounge remains closed, and we will be contacting customers directly who had bookings for today.

Stansted Express update: Trains delayed until 10.30am

Following an earlier fault with the signaling system between Stansted Airport and Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted Express trains are set to face disruptions until 10.30am.

Potential disruptions include delays of up to 15 minutes and cancellations.

Other services impacted by the signaling issue include CrossCountry trains between Birmingham New Street, Cambridge and Stansted, along with Greater Anglia trains between Liverpool Street and the airport.

What will happen to passengers with delayed flights Stansted Airport?

Air passengers’ rights rules do not cover a case when issues at an airport cause passengers to miss their planes, according to the Independent.

However, past instances at Stansted and other airports indicate that travelers who become stranded will be able allowed to rebook for later flights free of charge.

Stansted is the UK’s fourth busiest airport, which is expected to have 84,000 passengers pass through it on Wednesday, as reported in the Independent.

Passengers will also be impacted by a separate signaling issue which meant 10 Stansted Express trains to and from London were cancelled on Wednesday morning.

Rail disruptions, including potential cancellations or delays of up to 15 minutes, are set to impact passengers until around 10.30am.

Many flights delayed departing from Stansted Airport

According to the latest flight tracking data, many flights departing from Stansted Airport have been delayed following disruption from an earlier fire.

Flights continue to face disruption as of 9.23am, facing delays to scheduled departure times.

One AirTanker flight set for Belize City is facing an estimated delay of over an hour from its scheduled departure time of 9.30am.

Flights which departed from the airport this morning including, Jet2, Tui, Ryanair and Easyjet airlines, were delayed.

The first commercial flight due to set off after the fire, a Jet2 aircraft which was scheduled to depart to Mytilene at 5.40am, was delayed by over an hour, eventually taking off at 6.48am.

Stansted Airport issued an earlier statement at 7.55am urging passengers to check the status of their flights and allow extra time for their journeys if necessary.

Passengers hit out at Stansted Airport travel chaos

Several disgruntled passengers have taken to social media to voice their dismay at the travel chaos caused by an earlier fire at Stansted Airport.

One user, @meandthestars_, posted a photo of passengers piled into the departure lounge with the caption: “absolute chaos at Stansted airport thousands missed their flights (including us)”.

Another user, @Edward__SS, voiced their frustrations at the long security queues, writing “would it not be advisable to perhaps open more of the security lines? Particularly after people paid for the fast pass”.

Stansted Airport warns travellers to allow extra time for delays

Stansted Airport released a statement which said it is taking longer than usual for passengers to pass through security as a result of the earlier fire.

There is also unrelated disruption to the Stansted Express and CrossCountry rail services to the airport.

The airport advised passengers “to check the status of their flights and allow extra time for their journeys if necessary”.

Stansted Airport released a statement at 6.30am following an earlier fire confirming the departure lounge is open and passengers are now able to pass through security.

The statement said: “Following the fire in our Escape Lounge earlier this morning, the departure lounge is now open.

“Passengers are being processed through security, though waiting times may be longer than usual in the circumstances.

“Flights were not suspended and both departures and arrivals are operating.

“Some flights may be subject to delays and passengers are advised to check with their airlines.

“We thanks all passengers for their patience as we ensured the terminal was safe for them to re-enter.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service was called to reports of a collision at 7am on the M25 between junctions 9 and 8.

Ambulance crews assessed and treated one patient on the scene before taking them to East Surrey Hospital for further medical treatment.

Trains between Pitsea/ Grays and Fenchurch Street are impacted.

Road closure in Enfield due to fire on Maybury Close

Maybury Close in Enfield is closed due to a flat block fire which started in the early hours of Monday morning.

Traffic on the A10 and Hoe Lane may also see plumes of smoke as a result of the blaze.

10 fire engines and 70 firefighters were sent to the incident and are currently working to get the blaze under control.

The District line is delayed between Parsons Green and Wimbledon due to a signal failure.

Network Rail are working to fix the issue.

TfL reported good service on the rest of the line at 7.27am.

The Bakerloo line is facing delays due to a signal failure at Piccadilly Circus.

Meanwhile, there are severe delays on the Piccadilly line due to a late finish of engineering works at South Kensington and a points failure at Northfields.

TfL reported a good service on all other Tube lines at 7.18am.

Chiswick High Road partially blocked due to traffic accident

Traffic queues are building on the A315 Chiswick High Road in both directions due to a crash which occurred between Chiswick Road and Acton Lane (Turnham Green).

The incident occurred at around 6.52am according to the traffic data analysis platform INRIX.

A detour is in operation for several bus routes including the 110, 237, 267 and H91.

Commuters facing delays on Piccadilly line

There are severe delays on the Piccadilly line on Monday morning due to a points failure at Northfields and a late finish of engineering works at South Kensington.

Tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on buses and Elizabeth line services.

Good service was reported on all other lines as of 7.08am by TfL.
