Motorists are stuck in severe delays of almost 90 minutes on a nine-kilometre stretch of road in south-east London this afternoon.

Drivers are advised to avoid the A2 eastbound from Kidbrooke Interchange to Danson Road near Falconwood.

Highways cameras show long lines of static traffic and some frustrated motorists are even reported to have turned around and driven the wrong way down the road to try and escape.

The AA said: “Severe delays of 86 minutes and delays increasing are on the A2 Eastbound between A2213 Kidbrooke Park Road (Kidbrooke Interchange) and Danson Road, with an average speed of 5mph.”

Fire crews freed a driver trapped in a vehicle on the A2 in Canterbury, Kent earlier today.
