London travel and weather LIVE: Latest Tube and train updates after snow falls on capital

Londoners making journeys by car and train will be keeping a close eye on the weather as snow and ice threaten to cause travel disruption.

A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place throughout Friday morning for an area covering the capital, Greater Manchester and Cardiff.

Wintry weather is threatening to cause disruption on the roads and railways with heavy snow predicted to fall in Scotland.

Meanwhile, a number of Tube and Overground lines are disrupted due to planned closures over the Christmas and New Year period.

That means it’s another couple of days of bracing against the icy cold.

The Tube and rail services across the capital remain largely unaffected by the wintry weather.

However, there are severe delays clockwise on the Central line and eastbound on the Hammersmith and City line as ill passengers are being attended to.

Sunshine staves off sleet showers

The sun is out across most of London, staving off any further sleet and snow showers for now.

That hasn’t raised the temperatures by much, however, with the chilly weather not expected to reach beyond 4C today.

Travel disruption could last until Sunday

10:43 , Rachael Davies

Transport for London has warned that travel disruptions could occur until Sunday.

“The Met Office have issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice that will affect services across England, Wales and Scotland until Sunday 4 January,” reads a statement from TfL.

This is due to ice and snow potentially affecting signalling points, overhead cables, and train lines themselves.

Southern service disrupted

10:31 , Rachael Davies

Southern services are unable to run between Shepherds Bush and Watford Junction, on routes going via Wembley Central and Harrow & Wealdstone, with disruptions expected until 1pm.

This is due to a failure of the power supply to the overhead electric wires between Shepherds Bush and Wembley Central, although it’s unclear if this is related to the weather warning.

TfL has warned travellers that there could be cancellations to other services south of Shepherds Bush to reduce congestion across the lines.

A shifting wall of sleet and snow

10:20 , Rachael Davies

The Met Office has warned that not just London but also parts of southern England and Wales will be affected by the weather until midday today.

“An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting approximately 2 or 3 hours in any one place,” warns the Met Office.

More serious weather conditions are expected further north, with heavy snow showers and a severe weather warning in place for Scotland in the afternoon.

Tube and rail largely unaffected

10:07 , Rachael Davies

The Tube and rail lines appear to be largely unaffected by the weather so far.

The only disruptions reported by Transport for London are planned part closures on the District, Mildmay, and Picadilly lines.

Those partial closures don’t seem to be related to the yellow weather warning.
