London to move into Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions from midnight on Friday

London will be moved into Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions this week.

MPs have been told that from midnight on Friday, the capital will be considered 'high risk' and see tougher measures put on millions of people.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was in continuing discussions with ministers on Thursday morning about the move.

Tier 2 will see Londoners banned from mixing indoors - including in pubs and restaurants - with anyone outside their household unless it is their support bubble.

Outdoor meet ups are allowed as long as social distancing is adhered to and people follow the 'rule of six'.

These measures are in addition to the 10pm curfew already in place for hospitality venues.

Mr Khan had previously said in a letter to the Prime Minister that with the infection rate in London was approaching approaching 100 cases per 100,000 head of population and that new measures would be needed "very soon".

London remained in Tier 1 - which is considered medium risk - when the new tiered system was introduced on Monday.

Greater Manchester is also set to find out today if it will be moved into Tier 3 and be bound by the toughest restrictions in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.
