London starting to feel like ‘vibrant global capital we know and love’, says Sadiq Khan

London is starting to feel more like the “vibrant global capital we know and love”, Sadiq Khan said on Wednesday after a jump in workers heading into the city centre.

On Monday, London saw its busiest morning-rush hour since the pandemic started and early figures suggested that would be beaten on Tuesday.

The number of tap ins on the Tube between 4am and 9am yesterday increased by 31 per cent compared to last Tuesday, while on buses the recovery was even more stark with numbers up 55 per cent compared to last week.

The Mayor and business chiefs are hoping for figures on Wednesday to show Londoners continuing to return to the capital’s centre.

Mr Khan told The Standard: “It has been brilliant to see Tube ridership rise day-by-day this week and for London to feel more like the vibrant global capital city that we know and love.

“We hope these numbers continue to climb in the coming weeks as Londoners and visitors use public transport to make the most of what our city has to offer.”

He appealed on Wednesday to people using public transport to show “respect” to fellow passengers by wearing a face mask.

He also condemned a “selfish minority” who refuse to comply, when asked by Transport for London enforcement officers, with the condition of travel to don a face covering.

He stressed these individuals faced being removed from Tube, train and bus services, as well as stations.
