London's train map set for overhaul as Crossrail and Overground network expand

A new map showing what London’s rail network would look like if Mayor Sadiq Khan took control of suburban trains has been revealed by TfL

Under the plans, the Overground network would take over services from providers such as Southern Rail.

Main Tube and Overground stations would be connected to suburban rail and Crossrail lines.

Mr Khan says the proposals will improve the service, tackling both overcrowding and delays.

TfL’s board will consider the mayor’s proposals, before seeking approval from the Government to move forward.

"Passengers on London's suburban rail routes simply aren't getting a good enough service,” Mr Khan said.

“They face increasing rail fares year after year, yet face daily delays, cancellations and overcrowding.

"Ahead of the Autumn Statement, I'm looking forward to presenting the full business case for how a transformed and modernised suburban rail network could also unlock new homes and provide other substantial economic benefits for London."

Earlier in September, MPs and passenger groups were shocked to discover that Southern Rail's owner had experienced a 27 per cent hike in profits – one day after £20 million of taxpayers money was committed to help end delays.

Think tank Centre for London called on the Government to devolve the rail network this year because of “strained” rail services in south London.

Further devolution of suburban rail service was agreed in 2016 – but TfL must wait until contracts with the rail companies are up before it can take control.

Franchises in southeast London and in Kent have contracts that are up for renewal in the Autumn, with South West Trains, Southeastern and Govia Thameslink Railway due for renewal by 2021.
