Scores of London’s concert venues will see their business rates bills rise from next month, new data showed on Tuesday.
Property agent Colliers International looked at 55 theatres that collectively had a £9.8 million bill for 2018/19. That will increase to £10.4 million in the year starting April 2019.
The Royal Opera House will have to pay £1.3 million, up from £897,500, while the Royal Albert Hall’s bill rises to £954,000 from £934,000.
Other sites that will see rises include the Dominion Theatre and Young Vic.
John Webber, head of business rates at Colliers International, said “Last month the Parliamentary select committee said it was going to look at how to help the retail sector and recommended alleviation to the business rates burden. This is all very good, but the pain this unfair tax causes goes much wider than pure retail."
He added: "We need a widespread reform across all sectors of the market. London’s West End is no exception."
