London's The Hunger Games stage adaptation called 'shambolic' by fans after long queues

The new stage adaptation of the Hunger Games has had chaotic reviews from theatregoers.

The play, which stars John Malkovich as President Snow and Mia Gallagher as Katniss Everdeen, is based on the first book by Suzanne Collins.

It opened on Monday at London's specially-built Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre.

But on TikTok, theatregoers reported the show started an hour late, with some saying it did not finish until 11:45pm.

Some fans said that while they enjoyed the show, they felt the organisation was lacking.

“When the hunger games on stage starts at 7:30 and this is the line at 7:29,” one video showing a queue to the theatre said.

“The Hunger Games live on stage start time: 8:30. Interval: 10pm End of show: 11:45pm. That's 3h15 running time for the first preview,” another fan on X posted.

“Hunger games on stage view from district 11 row A,” one fan posted on X. “Really good despite being called restricted view. The venue and organisation was messy but the play itself was amazing!”

Another theatregoer posted on X: “can’t believe i was at the shambolic first night of the hunger games on stage what a day.”

“And even leaving the hunger games stage show is a mess with ONE STAIRCASE,” another said.

“Don’t get me wrong, The Hunger Games On Stage was a brilliant performance, and they did incredibly well to fill in the empty roles,” another added. “However, the (lack of) organisation last night was horrendous!”

The Standard has contacted a representative of The Hunger Games stage adaptation for comment.

The show – which follows the first book and film in the series – officially opens on November 13.

According to the website, John Malkovich doesn’t perform on stage, but “appear[s] on a state of the art screen at various points through-out the show”.

In other Hunger Games news, earlier this year it was announced Conclave star Ralph Fiennes was cast as the villain President Coriolanus Snow in the new Hunger Games movie prequel, Sunrise On The Reaping.

The 62-year-old English actor will take on the role of President Snow in the film adaptation of the fifth book in the franchise.

The book was published in March 2025 and is a prequel to the original trilogy.
