Chila Burman's Covent Garden Art Installation
(Picture: Getty Images)London’s Covent Garden has been transformed into a neon jungle for a new, free art exhibition.
Artist Chila Burman’s neon sculptures including a bright white tiger can be seen the exhibition launched in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.
The 3D installation is inspired by the British artist’s Punjabi heritage, feminist perspectives, mythology and is themed around love and identity.
The artwork features a distinctive floating neon octagon suspended from the centre of the hall, sculptures of peacocks, snakes and bulls also illuminate the space.
Burman has also scattered Punjabi words to bring her own reworking of Covent Garden’s history as a fruit, vegetable and flower market. Above which she has hung the word Fruity which is Punjabi for tasty and delicious.
In the North Piazza shoppers will be greeted by a pink neon message ‘Look at you through their eyes and wonder what you see’ lighting up the market.
“I’ve been drawn to Covent Garden since moving to London to attend the Slade School of Fine Arts in 1981,” Burman said.
“It is this exciting energy and sense of magic that I’m capturing. Do you see words in rainbows will be a celebration of my Hindu Punjabi culture.
“Bright, exuberant, colourful and kaleidoscopic – the commission is designed to bring joy, positivity and a sense of magic to the public.”
As the installation is a celebration of love and identity, Covent Garden and Chila Burman will be supporting the Albert Kennedy Trust during this year’s Pride.
Covent Garden will donate £1 to the LGBTQ charity for each person Instagramming a picture of themselves at the installation and using #CoventGardenInRainbows.
