London run of Sister Act musical starring Whoopi Goldberg postponed until 2021

Whoopi Goldberg’s return to the role of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act has been delayed until next year.

The musical, in which Jennifer Saunders is set to co-star as the Mother Superior, was due to open in July at the Eventim Apollo, but has now been officially pushed back to July and August 2021.

Ticketholders have been moved to the same seats at equivalent performances for next year’s run.

Sister Act’s producer Jamie Wilson said it was a “difficult decision” to reschedule the show, but “we believe we have made the best decision open to us”.

Goldberg, who is also a producer, said everyone is “disappointed to not be able to do the show this summer”, but “thrilled” with the overwhelming support for the show.

The story in the 1992 film on which the musical is based has been updated for 2020. Diva Deloris Van Cartier is made to hide out in a convent after she witnesses a mafia hit. Disguised as a nun, she uses her skills as a singer to help the other sisters, under the watchful eye of Mother Superior.

It features music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner.
