London pub bosses apologise 'after staff told woman with multiple sclerosis they don't serve disableds'

Bosses of a Bloomsbury pub have been forced to apologise after member of staff allegedly told woman with multiple sclerosis that “we don’t serve disableds”.

Andy Smart said his sister Ros, who needs a wheelchair, was “turned away” from The Plough pub which is yards from the British Museum.

Mr Smart, 59, a professional comedian, wrote on Twitter: "This afternoon, my sister Ros, who has MS, was turned away from the The Plough, a pub on Museum Street, London WC1.

"The phrase they used was "We don't do disableds."

“The manager then told her they don’t serve disabled people.”

The pub issued a statement on Facebook blaming the refusal on a “miscommunication”.

Mr Smart’s post has received hundreds of comments including one from Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh who said he would no longer use the bar.

A spokesman for Greene King said: “The Plough are extremely saddened by what has happened and have apologised.

“We have investigated the incident, including reviewing the CCTV footage of the visit and speaking to the team members on duty yesterday, as well as the pub manager, who was not working at the time.”

The MS Society added: “We are shocked and saddened to hear that this happened to her.”
