The Conservative Chief and Deputy Chief Whip remain in post, Downing Street has said, after reports claimed that she had dramatically resigned just before a vote on fracking in the Commons.
It comes just hours after Home SecretarySuella Braverman was asked to resign by Liz Truss.
It follows claims that Tory MPs were “physically manhandled” into the House of Commons by members of the Government ahead of a key vote on fracking.
Labour MP Chris Bryant called for an investigation into the scenes at the Commons lobby during the fracking vote.
He told MPs: “I saw members of the House being physically manhandled and bullied. If we want to standup against bullying we have to stop bullying in this chamber as well.”
Broadcaster Andrew Neil and The Sun both reported that Ms Morton stepped down from her post following a row over whether the vote constituted a “confidence motion” in the Government.
Labour’s motion was defeated by 230 votes to 326, majority 96.
Ms Braverman’s departure comes after Liz Truss pulled out of a scheduled visit to a business in Hertfordshire, with No10 remaining tight-lipped about the reason for the last-minute cancellation.
