A London mother has told how she gave birth in an Uber just minutes away from the hospital’s front doors.

Amona Kadiku, a senior marketing manager, had planned to have her second child delivered in the birthing pool at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, but her baby son Adam had other plans.

The 36-year-old instead went into labour as her taxi was hurtling down King’s Road, with Adam being born yards away from the hospital doors last month.

Ms Kadiku, who lives 20 minutes away in south-west London, said: “We started the ride and it just progressed so quickly. I was nervous, and I was still in a lot of pain, but I wasn’t scared, I was just thinking ‘Okay, this might happen here. It’s crazy.’”

The driver and Amona’s partner, Kojo, attempted to help keep her calm as she gave birth just four minutes away from the hospital and immediately took her baby into her arms.

Only a corner later they were at the hospital, where the driver and her partner shouted for help, and medics rushed a bed over to the car.

“Some people on the street were clapping and shouting congratulations”, said Amona. The day’s excitement was not yet over — because when both mother and baby were checked over, Kojo went down on one knee and proposed at the hospital.

Ms Kadiku told the Standard: “We both cried, and I didn’t even really properly listen to what he was saying, because everything was so overwhelming but of course I said yes.”

A few days later, the pair contacted Uber to get the driver’s contact details and pass on their thanks.
