London mayoral elections: What to expect - The Standard podcast

The starting gun has fired on the 2024 London mayoral election, as the incumbent Sadiq Khan seeks an historic third term in charge of the capital, while Conservative candidate Susan Hall seeks to disrupt his tenure.

As it stands, polls by YouGov suggest it’ll be an easy victory for Sadiq.

Back in November a poll showed that the Mayor led his Conservative rival, Susan Hall, by 50 per cent to 25 per cent.

However a lot can change in politics in just one week, let alone the three-and-a-half months until the mayoral election vote on 2nd May.

Both Sadiq Khan and Susan Hall are promising to bring better, greener transport to London, crackdown on crime, and build more homes, according to their campaign websites.

It appears that the only issue the two disagree on is Ulez, so the devil will be very much in the detail when they release their full manifestos in the coming weeks.

The other mayoral candidates include Liberal Democrat Rob Blackie who wants to tackle serious crime, the Green party’s Zoe Garbett who’s focused on tackling climate change, as well as racial and social injustice, and Howard Cox from Reform UK has promised to scrap ULEZ entirely “on day one” if he gets elected.

There are currently 13 runners and riders vying to become London’s next mayor.

In this episode of The Standard podcast, our City Hall Editor Ross Lydall explains how he believes the 2024 mayoral election will unfold, and considers the factors that will make or break Sadiq Khan’s attempt to secure an historic third term as mayor of London.
