The count will start on Friday, May 7, the day after polling day, but is expected to take longer than normal due to social-distancing and infection control measures. This means the result will not be announced on the evening after polling day, as has become tradition, but on Saturday evening.
A spokeswoman for London Elects, the organisation running the polls for Mayor and the London Assembly, said: “Details are still being finalised — but in the interests of staff safety, the count will take place over two days. This means the mayoral result will not be announced before Saturday evening, at the earliest.”
At least 16 candidates are set to enter the race for mayor including Sadiq Khan, Shaun Bailey, Sian Berry for the Greens, Lib-Dem Luisa Porritt and Ukip’s Peter Gammons. The 25 members of the London Assembly, which scrutinises the Mayor, are elected on the same day.
