London Mayor and MPs deliver message of support to Trump's US racist tweet victims

Leading British politicians have joined anti-racist campaigners Hope Not Hate to condemn Donald Trump’s racially charged attack on four US congresswomen of colour.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan , dozens of MPs, trade union chiefs and activists have sent a message of support to Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley after the US President’s racist tweets at the weekend.

They wrote: “We are disgusted by Donald Trump’s attack on you. His blatant, unashamed racism has appalled people around the world. You embody the best of America. Its diversity is its strength.”

It comes after Mr Trump praised a rally in North Carolina at which the crowd chanted “Send her back!”

Labour ’s Tulip Siddiq said: “I am a second generation immigrant. I am the daughter of an asylum seeker. This racist rally sends shivers down my spine. Those who are shocked by this have not been listening.”

And Labour MP David Lammy added: “Fascism spreads like wildfire. Especially when it comes from the President of the United States of America. Chilling to my core.”

Matthew McGregor of Hope Not Hate added: “Trump’s racism crosses borders - his slurs have an impact around the world and have given heart to white nationalists everywhere.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump  supporters repeatedly chanted for a Somali-born politician to be 'sent back', repeating a similar statement from the president.

Crowds at the North Carolina rally for Mr Trump shouted 'send her back, send her back' referring to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Labour MP David Lammy branded the rally a "cult of white supremacists", as chilling footage shows the crowds lapping up the president's vile rants.

Rep Omar arrived to the US almost 30 years ago as a child refugee and is an American citizen.

She has been an outspoken critic of the president's far-right, 'America first' policies and the ongoing situation on the Mexico border.
