London Marathon road closures 2019: Traffic and travel advice plus public transport

The London Marathon is one of the feel good events of the year.

Well, that is if you are not a local resident with a car and somewhere to go on Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, the downside of having 50,000 people plodding around the streets of London, with hundreds of thousands more watching from the sides, means that roads will have to be closed in the area.

Public transport will also be busier than ever, as spectactors charge around the capital to spot their loved ones.

But fear not, you can get yourself prepared for Sunday's carnage with the London Marathon organiser's official guide to road closures and public transport.

Here is everything you need to know if you are in the London area on Marathon day.

Road closures

Public Transport

London Underground, London Overground and the Docklands Light Railway all have extra services running on the day of the marathon. This is by far the best way to get around.

Tube services in central areas of the capital, and race officials advise using public transport as the best way to get around on the day.

Tube stops in close proximity to the course route, including stations on the Jubilee line, Circle and District lines and DLR are likely to be extremely busy.

Buses

Buses travelling on roads affected by the Marathon will either be diverted or will not run the full length of their route until after the event. To find out more, visit tfl.gov.uk/bus/status

Santander Cycles

Some Santander Cycles docking stations located on the Marathon route will be suspended from Saturday evening until Sunday evening.

River Services

Thames Clippers will be running services from central London to Greenwich Pier, where it’s just a short walk to the Start at Blackheath/ Greenwich Park. Visit thamesclippers.com for more info.

Visit tfl.gov.uk or @TFLTravelAlerts on Twitter for a full rundown of all the public transport information.
