London knocked out of competition to find best place in UK as northern cities thrive

London has been dropped from a nationwide competition to find the best place in the UK.

The UK capital is known all over the world for its cultural gems, famous landmarks and unrivalled nightlife yet failed to score enough votes to remain in the contest.

It was eliminated this morning along with the bottom nine other places in the leaderboard, run by our sister site 2Chill, which features recommendations of staycations and days out around the country.

Currently in the lead is Newcastle, which squeaked past Liverpool earlier this week. Following closely behind are Greater Manchester and Wales.

There is now just another week left to vote for your home or somewhere you love to visit.

The other nine places axed from the competition at 9am this morning are Cheshire, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Bedfordshire, Leicestershire, Cumbria, Coventry, Cambridgeshire and Devon.

From today everyone will be given another chance to take part in the poll - even if they have voted before.

Even celebrities have been calling for people to vote for their favourite places.

TV presenter Eamonn Holmes, 61, tweeted: ““Belfast, Belfast it's a wonderful town are the words from a song in The 70's ...it's also where I was born, still live , and in every fibre of my being. I hope after reading this you love it too and will give us your vote. THANK YOU.”

Meanwhile reader Diane Bolla shared her support for Newcastle on Facebook, writing: “Newcastle town centre plus quayside. Grey street in town. Fabulous old buildings. New high buildings. Take the open top bus. Helicopter flights around town and coasts. Vote Newcastle.”

And Denise Dunbar shared her love of her home city: “Manchester. Big Cosmopolitan City. Something for everyone.”

View the leaderboard and vote for your favourite place. The winner will be announced on Friday, September 10.
