London floods: Mayhem as road turns into river with street completely submerged

A road has turned into river with a street completely submerged by floodwater.

Multiple road closures are in place while residents are being urged to move to a higher level in a north London borough after a 36-inch water main burst, causing murky floodwaters to rise up to 4ft-deep.

Footage and images from the scene show the water on Hornsey and Tollington Road in Holloway, in the north London borough of Islington, sitting above the level of car tyres.

Several cars and buses can be seen driving slowly through otherwise deserted intersections.

Thames Water and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) crews could be seen wading through the water in high-visibility suits, with several workers ferrying locals down the waters in inflatable dinghies.

A spokesperson from Thames Water has told residents on social media that the supplier is aware of the incident and a team is on site.

A member of staff at the Tollington Arms pub, on Hornsey Road, said: “It happened about 7am and within minutes there was flooding like a tsunami.

“The fire service were down very quickly and we hope along with Thames Water, they can get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

“It happened when the pub was shut but as we get through the morning, it may impact us but fingers crossed it gets sorted.

"We have got one eye on our cellar as that would get hit first.

"Let’s hope for a positive outcome.”

The pub has warned its followers on Twitter to "avoid our area" today, as cars are seen desperately trying to get thought the floodwater along the road.

With the message, it tweeted a video of the road outside, where the deep water could be seen spreading up four separate roads from a main junction.

The London Fire Brigade is "using flood barriers to divert water" after the water main burst.

The LFB added: "If you are affected by flood water, if possible (and without putting yourself at risk) move to a higher level."
