London fails to register on ranking of world’s most liveable cities with Auckland on top

London has failed to make it onto a top ten list of the world’s most liveable cities, leaving Auckland to grab the top spot.

The capital missed out on a Economist Intelligence Unit 2021 top ten ranking, which rates 140 cities across the world.

The highest-ranked city in the UK was Manchester in 54th, while London was ranked 60th.

Auckland, which has had led the list since 2018 and for years ran neck and neck with Melbourne grabbed the top spot of the survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)

The list has been compiled by the EIU as part of its Global Liveability Ranking for 2021.

In a statement it said New Zealand’s tough lockdown allowed their society to reopen and enabled citizens of cities like Auckland and Wellington to enjoy a lifestyle that looked similar to pre-pandemic life.

It also said the Covid-19 pandemic caused livability to decline in the last year “as cities experienced lockdowns and significant strains on their healthcare systems”.

“This led to an unprecedented level of change in the rankings, with many of the cities that were previously ranked as the most liveable tumbling,” reported the Daily Mail.

Osaka, Japan came second followed by Adelaide, Australia, and in joint fourth place is another city in New Zealand, Wellington, and the Japanese capital Tokyo.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Perth, Australia (6), Zurich (7), Geneva (8), Melbourne (8) and Brisbane (10th).

The least liveable city is the Syrian capital Damascus for the ninth year in a row.
