London facing tier 3 lockdown rules as Covid infection rate rises in capital

Covid-19 case rates are rising in three regions of England, according to the latest weekly surveillance report from Public Health England.

The highest rate is in London, which stood at 191.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week to December 6, up from 158.1 in the previous week.

In Eastern England the rate has risen from 116.2 to 147.2, while in south-east England the rate has increased from 142.2 to 160.8.

All other regions of England recorded a week-on-week fall.

South-west England had the lowest rate: 77.3, down from 91.2.

Case rates in England have fallen slightly across all adult age groups, Public Health England said.

The smallest drop is among 40-49 year-olds, where the rate stood at 195.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week to December 6, almost unchanged from 195.9 in the previous week.

This is also the highest rate among all age groups.

Rates have risen slightly among five to nine year-olds, up from 88.2 to 93.6, and among 10-19 year-olds, up from 191.3 to 193.2.
