London ethical fashion pop-up offers 'antidote' to Black Friday

An ethical fashion brand that hires women’s groups in London to create its designs is hosting a pop-up as an “antidote” to the consumerism frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Birdsong was established four years ago by ex-charity workers Sophie Slater and Sarah Neville.

Their chief designer Susanna Wen creates collections and then hires groups such as Mohila, formed of low-income migrant mothers based in Tower Hamlets who are fabric painters, and Heba, migrant women seamstresses based in Brick Lane, to create them, paying them above the London Living Wage for their work.

From today Birdsong will be hosting a pop-up store at Beyond Retro in Dalston in collaboration with the vintage store and female hygiene company THINX for two weeks. Prints, illustrations, homeware and jewellery from Tatty Devine will be sold.

There will also be a series of events such as comedy sets from Sara Pascoe , craft workshops and fundraisers for THINX and the groups supported by Birdsong.

Ms Slater said: “Each item comes with a tag with a picture and a signature of the person who made it so people know the love and care that went into each item. We are about making items that are built to last and not throw-away. It’s the opposite to Black Friday. A real antidote to that.”
