Covid-19 cases have fallen to a weekly rate of just over 15 confirmed new infections per 100,000 Londoners aged 60 and over as vaccines kick in, official figures reveal today.
They show the impact of the jabs as there is a growing divide in the seven-day rate between this age group and Londoners aged below 60.
The rate for those aged 59 and younger was 41.4 in the week to March 25, compared to 15.3 for the older group.
The official figures show that:
- The seven-day rate for London as a whole was 37.1, down 0.4 per cent on the previous week.
- Eighteen boroughs continued to see a drop in confirmed cases even after the return of schools and the greater use of mass testing for education and work settings picking up more infections.
- The biggest drop was in Islington of 37.4 per cent in the week to March 25, compared to the previous seven days, followed by Sutton down 29.1 per cent, Newham 22.4 per cent and Westminster 21.3 per cent.
- Fourteen borough areas saw increases.
- The largest was in Bexley where cases jumped 123.4 per cent, though from a low base, followed by Barking and Dagenham 81.2 per cent, Hackney and the City of London 47.9 per cent, and Hammersmith and Fulham 39 per cent.
- Croydon had the lowest seven-day rate at 22.
- Barking and Dagenham had the highest rate at 68.1.
- A further 468 cases were announced for the capital yesterday.
- A further 25,441 first dose vaccinations were announced yesterday to have been administered in the capital, taking the total so far to 3,154,072 as the vaccine is rolled out.
- A further 19,905 second dose jabs were announced yesterday to have been administered in the city, taking the total so far to 338,801.
- There were six fatalities announced for London yesterday, within 28 days of individuals testing positive for the virus, taking the total so far to 15,421. Health chiefs were expecting the death toll to fall as the vaccines take effect in older and more vulnerable age groups and as the disease retreats.
