London 'could introduce curfews' in bid to prevent second coronavirus wave

The capital could be subject to a night-time curfew as the Government desperately tries to stop a second wave of coronavirus killing more people.

A No10 spokesman refused to rule out a curfew on pubs or restaurants being introduced across London - or elsewhere.

London director of Public Health England, Professor Kevin Fenton, warned that more restrictions may be imposed, including some across the entire capital, to avoid a more stringent lockdown.

When asked about Prof Fenton’s warning, the No10 spokesman said: “We’ve continued to keep all regions and areas under constant review which is why we’ve introduced local lockdowns in certain areas.”

He added: “We will keep the infection rates across the country under review, and we will take action where we think it’s needed.”

Professor Fenton said new restrictions, combined with an increase in testing and a return of students to the capital's universities could keep a second wave at bay.

He also stressed all Londoners have a role in combating the virus.

He told the London Evening Standard : "It’s phenomenal what we did as a city in terms of the response to the national lockdown, the degree of suppression that we were able to achieve by the time restrictions were lifted...very low rates of death and cases.

“As we move into the winter period, when it’s inevitable that we will see an increase in cases, that vigilance and that commitment is really going to be required from all of us whatever age, whatever background, wherever you are in the city - we need to pull together.”

He added: “In some areas which have seen resurgence there have been limits placed on the amount of time you can spend socialising. In some it might be local curfews so you’re not out drinking until the wee hours of the morning. By limiting that you also limit the amount of time people are spending in close contact with others.”
