London City airport shares sneak peek inside £500million makeover

London City Airport has given passengers a sneak peek of what they can expect when travelling through the terminal after its £500million transformation.

The airport has unveiled a short 'fly through' video which details the exact journey passengers will make whether they're arriving or departing.

The clip offers a sneak peek of designs for a brand new check in area, security, baggage claim, lounges and even the views passengers can expect at take-off and landing.

It all looks very swish, with heaps of new shops and restaurants on offer too for passengers looking to while away some time before their flight.

The development isn't just about the terminal though. The programme, which began in 2017, will also see eight new aircraft stands built as well as a parallel taxiway next to the runway.

However you're going to have to wait a little longer to check it out in real life, as the new facilities are set to open in 2022.

Construction is currently underway, with many of the new facilities being built over the King George V Dock waters.

It's not the first time that the airport has offered a teaser for passengers, having previously released design concepts of the terminal's interiors .

The short clip was created by the visualisation team at design and engineering consultancy Atkins, and comes after the airport saw a record-breaking day on Monday 17th June when 20,300 passengers travelled through the airport.

Although the majority of its visitors are business travellers, the airport says it expects to continue seeing an increase in leisure travellers.

In fact, it anticipated this summer to be its busiest ever with a forecast of five million passengers in 2019. (Following the overhaul, it's expected to rise to as much as 6.5 million).

Peter Adams, Chief Development Officer for London City Airport, said: "We are building a new and impressive gateway for London in the heart of the Royal Docks, on the doorstep of the city and fast-changing East London boroughs.

"This new animation brings to life for the first time what customers can expect - be they international visitors to London, leisure city breakers or business travellers.

"London City Airport will offer an amazing modern airport experience while retaining the speed and efficiency that we know our passengers love."
