London bus workers could strike on same days as Tube drivers, union warns

Bus workers could strike on the same days as London Underground drivers in the coming months, a union has warned.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) who work on the Tube are due to strike for two days in April, May and June in a dispute over hours.

It comes after the Tube strike that was set to cause serious disruption to the London Underground next week was called off.

About 1,800 Tube drivers who belong to the RMT union had been expected to walk out from midday on Tuesday for 24 hours, and again from midday on Thursday.

On Wednesday afternoon, the RMT announced that its action had been suspended after “progress” in peace talks with Transport for London.

The strike had been called by the RMT in protest at proposals to introduce a four-day week for Tube drivers.

Now, Unite has announced its members employed by TfL as bus station and network traffic controllers are being balloted for industrial action in a dispute over rosters.

The ballot closes on April 13, and any strike action could coincide with the RMT strikes, said Unite.

General secretary Sharon Graham said: "Our hardworking members at TfL do an important role in keeping bus passengers safe and services running well, but they have been rewarded with rota changes that will severely impact their work/life balance and even leave them at risk of being disciplined for a situation not of their control.

"This situation is unacceptable and TfL must change course or face a highly disruptive strike. Our members at TfL have the union's full unwavering support during this dispute."

A TfL spokesperson said: "We continue to work with Unite on proposed changes to the rota and hope to reach a position which works for everybody."
