London Bridge train fire: Commuters flee after brakes burst into flames

Commuters were forced to flee a London train this morning after flames poured from beneath a carriage after brakes reportedly caught fire.

The Southern Rail service stopped at London Bridge, where black smoke was seen spilling onto the platform  as passengers left the train.

Southern tweeted: "We've been advised that a fire has been reported at London Bridge.

"Additionally on a separate platform, an ill passenger is being attended to.

"Emergency services are on site dealing with these incidents."

At least two fire engines were seen outside the station and a 'hazard zone' cordon was put in place.

Services are expected to be disrupted until at least 11am, with Southern advising passengers not to travel through London Bridge.

The fire has shut down at least three platform at one of the capital's busiest stations.

A statement from National Rail said: "A fire on a train at London Bridge has resulted in some platforms being blocked.

"Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled, delayed or diverted. Disruption is expected until 10:30."

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said: "We were called at 8.41am to reports of a fire on a train. The breaks were alight. All passengers were taken off the train safely."

Two fire engines remain on the scene.
