London Bridge terrorist wiped bloody knife on his beard as victims bled to death

The leader of the London Bridge terrorists washed blood off his knife and wiped it on his beard as his victims bled to death.

The “chilling gesture” by Khuram Butt was among many harrowing images caught on CCTV.

The 27-year-old was filmed going behind the bar of a restaurant to rinse the 12-inch ceramic blade under a tap, having just stabbed a customer in the throat.

The clips were shown on the second day of the inquest into the deaths of the eight victims.

The atrocity began on London Bridge with pedestrians fleeing as the killers’ van mounted the pavement three times.

Butt and two accomplices then strolled around the busy streets slashing and stabbing at passers-by.

The recorded screams echoed around the Old Bailey court room.

Attacker Youssef Zaghba, 22, stopped to drink water during the slaughter while thug Rachid Redouane, 30, tied his shoelaces. A phone video captured the panic among the Saturday night revellers on June 3, 2017, as the knifemen shouted “Allahu Akbar”.

There was footage, with haunting audio, as nurse Kirsty Boden, 28, was stabbed to death while trying to help a victim.

Survivor Roy Larner, dubbed the “Lion of London Bridge”, was seen being stabbed in the stomach as he confronted the men in a restaurant.

Within three minutes, Xavier Thomas, 45, Christine Archibald, 30, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sara Zelenak, 21, Sebastien Belanger, 36, James McMullan, 32, Ignacio Echeverria, 39, and Kirsty had all died.

The last victim, Ignacio, swung his skateboard at the killers before Redouane repeatedly stabbed him.

The terrorists , who injured 48 people, were shot dead within 10 minutes by police in a two-second burst.

Gareth Patterson, QC, for the victims, asked senior investigating officer Det Supt Rebecca Riggs
about security on the Bridge, adding: “If there had been barriers, Christine and Xavier would be with us today.”

She said: “That may be the case.”

The inquest continues.
