London Bridge terror attacker 'smiled as he sliced waiter's neck open'

An "evil" terrorist smiled as he sliced a French waiter's neck open with his knife during the London Bridge attack, an inquest heard.

Alexandre Pigeard, 26, was stabbed repeatedly from behind after coming face to face with one of the Jihadis on a staircase down to Borough Market.

A woman Alexandra had just served at Boro Bistro restaurant watched horrified as the killer appeared to revel in the bloodshed on 3 June 2017.

Asked what the extremist's face looked like as he hacked away at his victim, Andzelika Abokaityte said: "He looked evil and he was smiling."

The Old Bailey has heard how murderer Khuram Butt, 27, wiped his bloody knife clean on his beard in a "chilling gesture" after he stabbed victims.

Giving evidence today, Ms Abokaityte recalled hearing "screaming everywhere" before turning to see music lover Alexandre's final moments.

Jonathan Hough QC, for the coroner, asked: "As you looked at this scene, the waiter and the man behind, what did you see?"

Ms Abokaityte said: "He was stabbing him from behind a couple of times.

"Then I turned away and said to my friend 'run'."

Ms Abokaityte said when she turned back to look at the grinning terrorist she saw him slash a man's throat.

"I saw him slice into his neck," she added.

Ms Abokaityte could not confirm if the man whose neck was cut but it is believed to be Alexandre.

The Frenchman died from knife wounds to his neck and stomach.

Earlier, Alexandre's colleague Dimitri Gabriel revealed that the victim had run up the stairs to London Bridge after hearing the killers' van crash outside.

Mr Gabriel said: "The last words he said to me was 'let's go up and see what happened, maybe there's an accident on the bridge'."

Nicknamed 'King Of The Night', Alexandre, from Caen, Normandy, had been living in London for just over two years before he was murdered.

The youngster is the son of French musician and poet Philippe Pigeard.

In a moving tribute to his son, Mr Pigeard remembered his "dark, deep and soft eyes" at the inquest and said: "I'm present here as a desolated father who has lost a child in such circumstances, an inconsolable father who for 703 days has not been close to his son."

The other victims killed were Xavier Thomas, 45, Christine Archibald, 30, S bastien Belanger, 36, Kirsty Boden, 28, James McMullan, 32, Sara Zelenak, 21, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39.

Terrorists Butt, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, were shot dead by police.

The inquest continues.
