London Bridge partially re-opens after terror attack that killed two Cambridge graduates

London Bridge has partially re-opened following the terror attack which tragically claimed the lives of two Cambridge graduates.

Metropolitan Police officers said they have been working hard to enable the area to be opened again since Friday's incident.

The cordons either side of the bridge have now been reduced and the roads re-opened. However, the bridge itself currently remains closed.

The force initially tweeted that the bridge had reopened, however has since confirmed they are still working to do so.

A spokesperson said: has tweeted: "The cordons either side of London Bridge have been reduced & roads re-opened.

"The bridge itself currently remains closed & we are working to re-open it. We will update when this happens. Apologies for any confusion and inconvenience caused."

Cordons were put in place after the terror attack, which saw Usman Khan stab five people in Fishmongers' Hall before being held down by members of the public in nearby London Bridge until police arrived and shot him dead.

Two of the victims died following the attack.

They have been named as Jack Merritt, 25, of Cottenham, Cambridgeshire and Saskia Jones, 23, of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

Both were graduates of the University of Cambridge and family liaison officers are supporting their families.

Today tributes and flowers were placed on London Bridge after part of a police cordon and some vehicles were moved.

One tribute attached to a photo of Jack placed under a road sign read: "I have no words. You were so loved and so needed on this planet."

Another card attached to the photo said: "It may have taken us a long time to realise we would get on but once we did I could do nothing but adore you for being the wonderful and wholly special human being that you are.

"You have been a light and rock to so many and we love you."

Both victims were involved in the university's Learning Together programme – Jack as a co-ordinator and Saskia as a volunteer.

Terrorist Usman Khan was on licence and wearing an electronic monitoring tag when he launched his attack as he attended the conference on prisoner rehabilitation hosted by the scheme at Fishmongers' Hall.

The University of Cambridge confirmed two of their graduates had been killed and a third member of staff among the injured.

Professor Stephen Toope, vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge released as statement which read: "I am devastated to learn that among the victims of the London Bridge attack were staff and alumni of the University of Cambridge, taking part in an event to mark five years of the Learning Together programme.

"What should have been a joyous opportunity to celebrate the achievements of this unique and socially transformative programme, hosted by our Institute of Criminology, was instead disrupted by an unspeakable criminal act.

"I am sad beyond words to report that course coordinator Jack Merritt and former student Saskia Jones were killed. Both were Cambridge graduates.

"Among the three people injured, whose identities have not been publicly released, is a member of University staff.

"Our University condemns this abhorrent and senseless act of terror. Our condolences, our thoughts and our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families. We will be providing all the support we can to our colleagues, including counselling for staff and students who are affected by the event.

"We are grateful to the Metropolitan Police, to local emergency services, and to those members of the public – including students, staff, alumni and other participants at the event – who selflessly intervened to contain the incident."
