London Bridge on lockdown after man scales crane next to Shard

A man scaled a large crane next to London's Shard today, sending the surrounding area into lockdown.

Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene after the man was spotted scaling the crane shortly before 1pm this afternoon.

He remained there, at a height of around 200ft, for almost six hours.

Police confirmed he came down at 6.45pm and has been detained by officers.

He was arrested for aggravated trespass and remains in custody. His motives are unknown at this stage.

Twitter users have speculated that a message is written on his back as part of a protest (@srizaev786)

Witnesses suggested he might be a protester owing to apparent writing on his shirt. This has not been confirmed by authorities.

A large area around London Bridge Street and St Thomas Street, was sealed off by officers during the incident.

Road closures were also put in place, affecting local bus routes.

Commuters were warned to "check before you travel", while access to the sky scraper and London Bridge station was restricted.

British Transport Police also tweeted about the incident, saying: "Cordons are in place and some station entrances and exits are closed while emergency services respond. Thank you for your patience."

Visitors to the Shard were advised later in the afternoon to enter the attraction from its London Bridge entrance, since its main entrance on Joiner Street had to be shut.

The man is believed to have found his way onto the building site of a new apartment complex on St Thomas Street before climbing the crane.

Police were called to the scene beside the 95ft sky scraper at 12.57pm, as numerous onlookers reported concerns for the man's welfare.

Crowds gathered nearby throughout the day as specialist units attempted to bring him down.

Met Police said they will provide updates on the man's status "when possible".
