London Bridge attack: Sadiq Khan urges people to go about Christmas shopping and 'normal business' to defy terrorism

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has encouraged people to go Christmas shopping on Saturday and resume their "normal business" in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Saturday, Mr Khan praised those who helped tackle Usman Khan - who was grappled to the ground and disarmed by members of the public before he was killed by police.

Two people were killed by the convicted terrorist during the knife rampage and three others were injured. One remains in a critical but stable condition on Saturday.

Mr Khan added that there will be a greater police presence over the weekend in the capital for reassurance of the public.

The mayor said: "What we shouldn’t allow to happen is for our way of life to be disrupted by this terrorist – that’s what they want.

“What I’m really proud about is, last night, outside the cordoned area in London Bridge and in parts of central London, there were people enjoying bars, enjoying restaurants, going about their normal business."

The mayor added: “I’m hoping people today come to London to shop for Christmas, to go about their normal business – they will see more police officers, some armed, some not armed in uniform.”

Mr Khan said there was “no reason to be alarmed” about heightened security measures and that people should remain vigilant.

A man and a woman were killed in the terrorist attack and Usman Khan was shot dead by the police.
