London bomb scares: Downing Street cordoned off and TWO polling stations evacuated

London has been hit by a series of bomb scares on the day voters go to the polls in European elections.

Whitehall was put on lockdown after a suspicious package was found, with specialist officers called to investigate.

After an assessment, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the item was not dangerous.

Meanwhile polling stations in Highgate and Kingston were earlier closed.

A World War 2 ordinance device discovered on a building site caused the Kingston evacuation.

And the Metropolitan Police said that the incident in Highgate, North London, was stood down after neighbours were told to steer clear because of a "possible bomb".

Posting on Twitter the London police force wrote: "Temporary road closures in place around Whitehall whist suspect item assessed. Police attended at 1201hrs today. Specialist officers are now in attendance. Thank you for your patience."

In an update shortly before 2pm, police in Westminster wrote: "Happy to update the item concerned has now been fully assessed and deemed non-suspicious. Roads will be reopened shortly. Thanks again for your patience and cooperation."

Police were called to Fassett Road in Kingston at around 9.15am after the unexploded bomb was found on a building site.

The Ministry of Defence has been called in to assist, and part of Kingston University was closed off.

A polling station was relocated to a nearby building.

A university spokesman told the BBC: "It will be closed for the rest of the day. All staff and students based at Penrhyn Road may go home.

"Be prepared that the campus may also be closed tomorrow."

Describing this morning's scare in Highgate, Carrie Kirkpatrick wrote on Facebook: "Just been told I can’t vote at the moment as my Polling Station and my road are closed due to intel about a possible bomb. We’re hardly the heart of Westminster!

"Who knew that Highgate Library, at the end of my garden, was such a hotbed of intrigue? It’s all becoming rather like a Tom Sharp novel...."
