Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed on Wednesday with British Minister of State for Immigration Caroline Nokes the issue of Syrian refugees.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement that the talks focused on the resettlement of 422 Syrian citizens, who had been allowed to pass through the country for a limited period, awaiting the completion of their resettlement procedures.

Britain, along with Canada and Germany, has pledged to resettle Syrian citizens who were working in the civil defense in opposition-controlled areas and fled to the occupied Golan Heights when the Syrian army began an offensive to regain the border region.

Jordan gave the UN the green light to regulate the passage of the 422 Syrian citizens through its territories, after receiving pledges from the three countries to resettle them within a maximum period of three months.

Nokes highly valued the great humanitarian role assumed by Jordan towards the Syrian refugees and reaffirmed her country’s commitment to support the kingdom in shouldering the burden of the refugees.

Safadi and Nokes underlined the need for the international community to continue to assume its responsibilities towards refugees and provide the necessary aid that would contribute to meeting their needs.

The two ministers also discussed the Jordanian-British cooperation and means of enhancing bilateral relations.
