London ambulance worker who used benefits to pay for holidays hid £100,000 inheritance

A London Ambulance Service worker used benefits money to splash out on a family holiday to Disney World while hiding a £100,000 inheritance.

Lorna Overington, 53, kept quiet about the windfall following the death of her mother as she claimed state handouts.

As well as the family holiday to the theme park in Florida, she also gave her son and daughter gifts of £10,000 each.

Overington, an ambulance service administrator, admitted being a benefits cheat between 2014 and 2017, and was sentenced at Kingston crown court on Friday to 14 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.

The court was told Overington started claiming housing benefits when her marriage collapsed and she needed to find a new home.

Her mother had died in January 2014, leaving behind a £400,000 home in New Malden and inheritance payments that were destined for her daughter.

However, Overington, from New Malden, did not declare the money when she submitted her benefits claim. She has repaid £15,000 of about £19,000 she owes, and is on a payment plan to return the rest of the money.
