London 2012: 10 best of the web

A sucker for a sausage sandwich

Mo Farah took time out of his schedule before flying back to the US by leading a free-running event around Regent's Park. The event was sponsored by Holiday Inn, which provided free breakfasts for the first 250 finishers – more than enough incentive for the Guardian's Edward Gibbes to don his running shoes.

Blazing paddles

Great Britain's canoe slalom team enjoyed success at the World Championships in Bratislava, taking home a bronze medal in the team event. The pairs of Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott, Rhys Davies and Matthew Lister, and David Florence and Richard Hounslow, finished behind France and Slovakia, rounding of a good weekend for Team GB, who qualified in all four classes for the 2012 Olympics.

Touch gloves and come out at the bell

GB boxing has named the squad to go to the International Amateur Boxing Association World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, next month. The competition is an Olympic qualifier, which means that all those who reach the quarter-finals are eligible to be chosen for London 2012. The 12-man team includes two 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallists, Simon Vallily and Tom Stalker, and the 2008 European champion Luke Campbell.

Beware the cybermen

A new survey, conducted by the security technology company McAfee, has highlighted a huge lack of awareness about potential cyber attacks at the Games. Only 2% of respondents, which included MPs, business leaders and journalists, saw a cyber attack as the biggest threat in 2012. This comes despite the fact that the IOC and the BOA have already reported being subjected to cyber attacks, and figures which show that there were 14 million malware events reported per day at the Beijing Olympics.

Bolt bounces back

Usain Bolt bounced back from his false-start disappointment in Daegu to run his fastest time of the year at a World Challenge meeting in Zagreb, but said afterwards he was disappointed with the time because he had a "really poor start and I kind of lost concentration after the start". His time of 9.85sec still only puts him as the third fastest man this year, behind Yohan Blake's 9.82 in Zurich last week and Asafa Powell's world leading 9.78 run in Lausanne in July.

It's that poem again

After her quadruple scull crew surprisingly struggled to qualify for next year's Games, having to win a smaller B race after coming third in both their heat and the subsequent repechage, Annabel Vernon delivers a candid assessment of their performance and her experience of it, ending on a literary note with a bit of Rudyard Kipling.

Good week...

It was a good week for British TriathlonAlistair Brownlee and Helen Jenkins secured the men's and women's World Championships at the season-ending Grand Final in Beijing. The third place of Jonathan Brownlee, Alistair's brother, in the race was enough to take silver in the World Series.

Bad week...

But it was a bad week for 150 Team GB competitors, with news that many of them will be forced to miss the opening ceremony to keep them fresh for their events.

Tweet of the week

"Would like to sleep, but so many thoughts filling my head...... And, unfortunately, this is one very big head to fill. #damnyouDNA" Mark Cavendish has been wearing his no doubt very large thinking cap during the Tour of Britain.
