Lola Young is pursuing legal action against the co-producer of her smash hit song “Messy”, days after she announced a hiatus from music.
Per the BBC, Young has filed an intellectual property claim against Carter Lang in response to his claims that he deserves songwriting credits on four of her songs — an assertion Young’s lawyers said she “strongly refutes”.
The British singer’s legal team said she was left with “no choice” but to pursue legal action against Carter, whose credits also include songs with SZA, Lil Nas X, Post Malone and Doja Cat.

“It is with immense disappointment, especially given recent events, that we have no choice but to respond to recent writing credit claims from Carter Lang on four Lola Young songs by issuing legal proceedings on her behalf,” Young’s lawyers told BCC.
“Carter’s claims are strongly refuted and we will not allow Lola’s reputation and integrity to be called into question – particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place,” they added.

The names of the four songs at the centre of the dispute have not yet been revealed, but “Messy” — the track co-produced by Carter that shot Young to international fame last year — is not believed to be one of them.
Young has released three albums, with the most popular being 2024’s This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway and this year’s I’m Only F**king Myself .
It’s reported that the legal drama has been ongoing for several months, with Young’s lawyers claiming that Carter’s allegedly undeserved pursuit of songwriting credits goes against her songwriting process.
“Lola has always been authentic in her songwriting process and acknowledges songwriting contributions where appropriate,” they said.
On Wednesday, Young cancelled all of her upcoming shows for “the foreseeable future” and said she was “going away for a while”.
“I really hope you’ll give me a second chance once I’ve had some time to work on myself and come back stronger,” she wrote when announcing her break on social media.
Young did not give an official reason for her hiatus, but it came just days after she collapsed on stage in the middle of her set at the All Things Go music festival in New York.
