The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Rabit: Tearz
This is forthcoming on Mumdance and my label Different Circles in September; think early Philip Glass meets a DatPiff mixtape voiceover and you’re there.
The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Pinch & Mumdance: Turbo Mitzi VIP AKA Double Barrelled Mitzi
I’m lucky to have this on my USB and its got me out of a few scrapes; the strings come in and you can feel the energy in the room lift… and the DJ’s relief.
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Wen ft Riko: Play Your Corner (Walton remix)
Mainly courtesy of me wanting to hear the second drop again and again. Walton somehow seems to up the menace just with a well-placed DX7 bassline and some angry-sounding brass.
The track I think has been unfairly slept on this year
Moleskin: Grand Ballet
This came out late last year, I think, but it definitely needs to be recognised as a classic; it has this relentless forward motion which I often try to find in tunes.
The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Bernard Parmegiani: De Natura Sonorum
I did actually play this at FWD» once. It definitely had floor-clearing potential but I was playing the first set; they’d only just opened the doors.
The track I wish I’d never played
DJ Deelline: Sexy Cinderella
I own and once played this unintentionally terrible/amazing breakbeat garage cover of I Want You Back, featuring “classic” MC patter on a par with Kurupt FM. I’m sure you can find it on YouTube.
The track that should have been a crossover hit
Mumdance ft Novelist: Take Time
This changed the game in a lot of ways: all those grime MCs touring the US this summer? Significantly down to this. I would have liked to have seen it in the charts.
The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Prince: I Would Die 4 U
That situation definitely needs something banging from the 80s with a LinnDrum in.
The track I’d play at sunset in Ibiza
Never been to Ibiza, mate.
The track I’d play at my funeral
Dizzee Rascal ft Breeze & Flowdan: Win
Unreleased OG emo-grime and some great on-topic funeral bars from Flowdan. Perfect.
