Logie Awards cancelled due to coronavirus

The Logies have become the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic, which has already taken a toll on the Australian entertainment industry.

Initially slated for June 28, Australia's annual television awards show has been cancelled outright for 2020, according to Bauer Media, which publishes the Logies' main sponsor, TV Week magazine.

A month ago, Bauer announced the Gold Coast ceremony would be shelved, but the awards would still be held in another form.

However, today Bauer Media group publisher Fiona Connolly said that, after weeks of discussion, the "challenges of COVID-19" had prompted organisers to write off the 2020 awards.

"All parties agree the most positive outcome is to not hold the TV Week Logies, including public voting, in 2020, but to stage an even bigger event on the Gold Coast in 2021," she said.

"The TV Week Logies is loved because it is a live event, with viewers at home enjoying seeing the red-carpet glamour and the entertainment community coming together to celebrate the television industry."

Comedian Tom Gleeson, winner of the Gold Logie in 2019, joked that the cancellation was part of a plan to extend his tenure as the small screen's most-celebrated performer.

Despite the cancellation, Connolly said the highlights of Australian television over the past year would not be ignored.

"The 2021 Logies will be an epic event that will take into consideration the 12 months of television just past, as well as all programs that will air for the remainder of this year," she said.
