Loganair and Eastern Airways to replace Flybe routes from Birmingham

A brace of airline operators new to Birmingham Airport have stepped in to replace services previously operated by collapsed firm Flybe.

Scottish carrier Loganair will introduce three daily services from Birmingham to Aberdeen and a daily service to Inverness from March 16.

Eastern Airways, which is based at Humberside Airport in north Lincolnshire, is also launching an Aberdeen to Birmingham route which is due to launch next week but the carrier is yet to confirm its planned schedule or start date.

Flybe entered administration in the early hours of this morning and all of its flights were grounded.

The business ceased trading with immediate effect upon the appointment of administrators from EY.

Flybe previously operated 24 different routes out of Birmingham and both Eastern Airways and Loganair, which is headquartered at Glasgow Airport, are new carriers for the airport.

Chief executive Nick Barton said: "This is great news and we thank these carriers for responding to the situation with Flybe to replace the capacity for Midlands' customers.

"It demonstrates that airlines realise the strong Midlands market and we look forward to welcoming these new carriers to Birmingham in the coming weeks.

"We would reassure customers that we are continuing talks with other airlines to backfill the remaining flybe capacity."

Loganair is taking up 16 routes in total formerly flown by Flybe, adding nearly 400 new flights per week, and has also opened a recruitment line for affected employees.

Chief Executive Jonathan Hinkles said: "The collapse of a long-standing airline like Flybe marks a desperately sad day, especially for the airline's dedicated team of employees and for customers facing disruption to their journeys.

"By stepping in quickly with a comprehensive plan, Loganair is aiming to maintain essential air connectivity within the UK regions to keep customers flying and to offer new employment to former Flybe staff members who are facing an uncertain future today."

Tony Burgess, managing director of Eastern Airways, said: "We do extend sympathy to all Flybe staff and their families following the sad news that Flybe has ceased trading.

"As a former franchise partner of Flybe, this will not impact on any flights and routes operated by Eastern Airways.

"Eastern Airways remains fully committed to providing regional connectivity with business links to capital cities and industrial centres."
