Lockerbie teenager Gordie Mutch in dominant Ginetta GT5 display at Donington

It was a dominant double delight for Lockerbie racer Gordie Mutch in the Ginetta GT5 Championship at the weekend.

The 18-year-old won two races and came second in the other in the latest stage of the championship securing 103 points out of a possible 109.

But things got even better after a title rival was handed a points deduction. Now just 12 points separates Mutch in fourth from the top spot with two weekends to go.

Gordie said: “What a weekend. We were just on another level and I think we really scared some of our title rivals with the pace we showed this weekend. From the moment I went on track for practice, everything just felt massively hooked up and I could just push whenever I needed to.

“My race two start is probably the best I’ve ever made and the car was just on rails. And in race three I got the hammer down and had a good couple of tenths over everyone else.

“The Fox team have done an incredible job this weekend and we’re now right back in the title fight. I can’t wait for Silverstone.”

Gordie’s weekend couldn’t have started any better as he stormed to his first pole position of the season to continue a streak of qualifying inside the top three that stretches back to May 2019.

A safety-car-interrupted Saturday race netted the Lockerbie-based 18-year-old second place, but on Sunday he left his rivals for dead, pulling out a 2.5-second lead on the opening lap of the morning race and storming to his first victory of 2020.

He had to fight harder in the opening laps of race three, but settled into his rhythm and pulled out a three-second winning margin by the chequered flag, setting the fastest lap along the way.

Although still fourth in the championship, he is just 14 points away from the series leader, with 35 available for each of the five remaining races.

Team principal Paul McNeilly said: “Three wins and seven podiums is another strong weekend for the team.

“The GT5 crew at Donington had a lot of success and it’s fantastic to see Gordie doing the double.

“He’s been part of the team since winning our Ginetta Junior Scholarship in 2017 and he’s showing all the speed we saw back then.”

This weekend the penultimate GT5 weekend takes place at Silverstone.

Gordie would like to thank the John Clark Motor Group and Acclaim Contracts Ltd for their continued support.
