Lockerbie sponsored walk set to raise £3,000 for youth football and mental health charities

A sponsored walk in memory of a Lockerbie youth football coach is set to raise £3,000 for charity.

Around 30 relatives and friends of Gary Murray, who died recently at the age of 49, walked nine miles.

The event was organised by Alan Murray who chose the distance as his late brother wore the number nine shirt during his playing days with Mid Annandale.

Alan said: “It was a fantastic day.

“The weather was great and the event was very well supported.

“We hope to have raised at least £3,000 for charity which is marvellous and just goes to show what a great community we have here in Lockerbie.”

More than £1,700 was donated through a Justgiving page and many of the walkers taking part had sponsor sheets.

The proceeds from the event will be split between youth football teams at Mid Annandale and Dumfries and Galloway Men’s Health.

The sudden death of father-of-three Gary, a self-employed joiner, left the community stunned.

In a Facebook tribute from the club he was described as ”a Mids legend”.

He played for the Saturday team and also served as manager and on the committee before going into coaching.

Known to his friends as Mugsy, he was a prolific striker during his playing days with Mids and holds the record for most goals in a season - 61 in 1994/95.

His brother Alan wore a Mids shirt bearing the number nine for Sunday’s walk.

He said afterwards: “I’m thinking of doing the walk annually in memory of Gary to celebrate his life.

“It was good to get everyone together.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part, those who helped out at the refreshments stops and Lockerbie Tesco which kindly supplied water and snacks for the event.”
