Lockerbie man planning football tournament in memory of former youth team coach

A Lockerbie man is planning a football tournament in memory of a former youth team coach.

Alan Murray, 51, is organising the event for August when his brother Gary would have celebrated his 50th birthday.

The 49-year-old father of three, who was a coach with Mid Annandale, died suddenly last year.

Alan is preparing to hold a youth tournament and a seniors event for over 40s.

He hopes to have eight teams taking part in each event and has spoken to football contacts across the region for the adults competition.

He said: “I am hoping to have teams from Annan, Lockerbie, Moffat, Dumfries, Langholm, Kirkconnel, Ecclefechan and Castle Douglas or Dalbeattie.

“I have spoken to some people in these towns already and they are happy to get involved.

“A lot of them played against Gary when he was a player with Mids.”

Gary, known to his friends as Mugsy, was a prolific striker during his playing days with Mids and holds the record for most goals in a season - 61 in 1994/95.

He went on to manage the club and was a youth team coach at the time of his death.

Alan added: “Gary’s birthday is August 5th and he would have been 50 this year.

“I decided to hold the memorial football tournament in his honour and I am hoping that it will become an annual event.

“I plan to hold the youth tournament on the Sunday before his birthday and the adults competition during the week.”

Gary was an avid Celtic fan and there may also be a local Old Firm game.

Last October Alan organised a sponsored walk which raised £4,200 for the D and G Mental Health Association and youth development at Mid Annandale football club.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring medals to present to children taking part in the youth tournament they can contact Alan by email on alanmurray136@yahoo.co.uk
