Lockerbie holds seniors football tournament in memory of player and coach Gary Murray

A seniors football tournament was held in Lockerbie at the weekend in memory of former player and coach Gary Murray.

The over 40s event was organised by his brother Alan and featured teams from Annan, Langholm, Lochmaben, Lockerbie and Moffat.

After a series of round robin matches the final was contested by Lochmaben and Moffat. They fought out a 1-1 draw with the Upper Annandale side winning after a penalty shoot-out.

The Lockerbie goalkeeper, Colin Dorrance, was named as the player of the tournament.

Before kicking off, the players and supporters observed a minute’s silence in tribute to Gary who died suddenly last year at the age of 49.

Known to his friends as Mugsy, he was a prolific striker during his playing days with Mids and holds the record for most goals in a season - 61 in 1994/95.

He went on to manage the club and was a youth team coach at the time of his death. The tournament was held in the week of what would have been his 50th birthday.

The winners were presented with their trophy by Gary’s parents Jim and Janette Murray.

Alan thanked the tournament sponsors, Houstons Coaches, Stuart Hanley of Mac Tools, Gordon Dinwoodie, Tesco, Colin Robson, Grange Quarry, Ross Wardrope, the Little Salon and Jim and Janette Murray. He also thanked Mid Annandale AFC for the use of their facilities, referees Willie Vivers and Gordon Pringle and fellow organisers Paul Rae and Toby Copland.
