Lockerbie brothers complete 40 laps outside Celtic Park to raise money for charity

Two Lockerbie brothers tackled a charity challenge to run 40 times around the outside of Celtic’s football stadium at the weekend.

Declan and Sean Kevans covered the distance of about 17 miles in less than three hours to raise cash for the JMA Trust.

The event was held in honour of their friend John Maurice Aitken who died a week short of his 33rd birthday in 2014 after three separate battles with cancer.

John would have been 40 this year and the trust encouraged supporters to use it as a theme for fundraising events.

Student Sean, 23, said: “John was a big Celtic fan and we decided it would be fitting to run around Celtic Park 40 times.

“It was pretty hard going as the sun was out for the majority of it but we had done plenty of training beforehand.

“It was just over 17 miles and we did it in two hours and 40 minutes which was under my target time of two hours 45.”

The pair had hoped to raise about £1,000 but are on course to collect three times that amount from sponsors.

Sean added: “So far, I think we have nearly £1,600 on line and I have about £600 on sheets and Declan has about the same so we have blitzed the original target.”

The pair, both fans of the Parkhead club, had an unexpected bonus waiting for them at the end of the run.

“A guy from the Celtic Foundation approached us and asked if we would like to go into the stadium to get some photographs at the side of the pitch which was a pleasant surprise,” said Sean.

The JMA Trust’s primary purpose is to provide support and advancement to those in need within the areas of health, education, employment, public participation in sport and with the relief of financial hardship.

Since 2015, it has raised £500,000 to help projects supporting hundreds of vulnerable individuals and groups across Scotland.
