Locked up: The people jailed in Bristol in the first week of 2020

Every week, Bristol Live reports from the city's courts.

This reporting forms an important part of the UK's open justice system, that justice can be seen to be done.

Some of the key benefits of open justice include ensuring public confidence and respect in democracy and the administration of justice, as well as deterring people from committing crimes and thereby the details of those crimes becoming public knowledge.

Here are the criminals who have been jailed on January 2 and 3.

Hakim Sharif

Cousins caught pushing drugs in St Werburghs ended up in court.

Police looked on as Hakim Sharif handed an item to a drug user in a park.

They detained him and found his cousin Assoweh Jacques was driving him in a BMW.

Sharif, 31, and Jacques, 30, both of Halston Drive in St Paul's, jointly pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to supply.

Jacques also pleaded guilty to possessing 1g of cocaine found on him.

Judge Julian Lambert jailed Sharif for 2,045 days.

He handed Jacques 21 months' prison, suspended for two years.

Sean Perry

A man who cut his girlfriend in the neck made her hold the knife to make it look like she stabbed herself.

Sean Perry and Rachel Wibberley both had difficulties with alcohol and had a tempestuous relationship, Bristol Crown Court heard.

After an argument Perry reigned several blows on her before nicking her neck with a blade.

Perry, 34, of Stradling Avenue in Weston-super-Mare, was to face trial next month.

But he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and his plea was accepted.

The recorder Mr Marcus Pilgerstorfer jailed him for three years.

He handed Perry a restraining order to have no contact with Miss Wibberley, who is now his ex-partner.

Thomas Radley

Weapons possessed by HMP Bristol prisoner Thomas Radley included a table leg club and converted e-cigarette (CPS)

A convicted prisoner received a bloody welcome to HMP Bristol.

On his first day on B Wing Tommy Roberts was collecting hot water from a bathroom when he was pummelled by two inmates.

Though one attacker was not identified, the other man -Thomas Radley - admitted battering Roberts with a table leg converted into a club.

And when prison staff found Radley had another lethal weapon in his cell, Radley conceded the e-cigarette with a screw attached was his "pride and joy" and he intended to use it on someone's neck.

Radley, 26, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and having a weapon in prison.

He refused to instruct a solicitor and declined to attend court for sentence.

Judge Mark Horton jailed him in his absence for three years and four months.
